Etymology: Formation as τρυτ-άνη a. other instument names. I see no reason to connect στα-θμός (s. v.). Or as technical expression to στάχυς in some special meaning (?) (after H. στάχυς also "παρὰ τοῖς ναυπηγοῖς τὸ ἐπὶ τῆς φάλαγγος μεριζόμενον") ? - The word will be a technical word taken from Pre-Greek (not the a-vocalism).
